误会 (wù huì) covers both halves of the English pair at once: it is the verb to misunderstand and the noun a misunderstanding, with nothing added or changed. 你误会了 is you have misunderstood; 一个误会 is a misunderstanding.
As a verb it takes a person or a meaning as its object: 误会我, 误会他的意思. The bare 别误会 is extremely common on its own, the equivalent of do not get me wrong, usually before a correction.
The trap is that 误会 is about reading a person or a situation wrongly, not about failing to hear or follow. If the problem is that you simply did not catch the words, that is 没听懂 (méi tīng dǒng) or 不明白 (bù míng bai). Save 误会 for when the message landed but landed crooked, which is why it so often carries a whiff of hurt feelings.
