信用卡(xìn yòng kǎ) - credit card in Mandarin

信用卡 (xìnyòngkǎ) is the credit card, built from 信用 (xìnyòng), "credit, trustworthiness", and 卡 (kǎ), "card", a character borrowed by sound to represent the English word "card" itself, which is why it turns up in 银行卡 (yínhángkǎ), "bank card", and 会员卡 (huìyuánkǎ), "membership card", too.

The verb that pairs with it is 刷 (shuā), literally "to brush, to swipe": 刷信用卡 (shuā xìnyòngkǎ), "to swipe a credit card", is the standard way to describe paying by card, a leftover from the physical swipe motion even now that most payments are tap or chip.

信用卡 (xìnyòngkǎ) is distinct from 借记卡 (jièjìkǎ), "debit card", which draws straight from your own bank balance rather than lending you credit. In everyday speech many people blur the two, but the written distinction matters on forms and in banking contexts.
