星期五 (xīngqī wǔ) is Friday, 星期 (xīngqī, "week") plus 五 (wǔ, "five"), the last working day before the weekend proper begins.
The relief is built into ordinary speech too: 星期五终于到了 (xīngqī wǔ zhōngyú dào le), "Friday has finally arrived", uses 终于 (zhōngyú, "finally, at last") exactly the way an English speaker sighs "finally Friday".
星期五 (xīngqī wǔ) leads straight into 周末 (zhōumò, "weekend"): 星期五以后就是周末 (xīngqī wǔ yǐhòu jiù shì zhōumò), "after Friday comes the weekend", with 以后 (yǐhòu, "after") marking the handover.
