Examples

He made the trip for nothing; the person was out.

There is only one bus a day from here to the airport.

Let us make one more trip to the hospital.

一趟 (yí tàng) counts a trip: you go somewhere and you come back. It is not the same unit as 一次, which counts occurrences of anything at all. A journey gets 趟; an attempt, a meeting or a mistake gets 次.

It follows the verb, not precedes it: 去一趟银行, 跑一趟, 走一趟. It is also the measure word for scheduled services, so a bus or train on a timetable is 一趟车.

The trap is the tone sandhi. 一 is first tone in isolation but shifts to second before a fourth-tone syllable, so this is yí tàng and never yī tàng. The same shift gives 一个 as yí gè.
