友好(yǒu hǎo) - friendly in Mandarin

友好 (yǒu hǎo) combines 友 (yǒu, "friend") with 好 (hǎo, "good"), and together they mean "friendly", describing a person's manner or the relationship between two people, groups or countries: 他很友好 (tā hěn yǒu hǎo), "he's friendly".

友好 (yǒu hǎo) shows up constantly in formal and diplomatic language too - 友好国家 (yǒu hǎo guójiā), "friendly nations", or 友好关系 (yǒu hǎo guānxì), "friendly relations" - a register English speakers might not expect from a word that also does ordinary small talk about a helpful shop assistant.

Do not confuse 友好 (yǒu hǎo) with 友谊 (yǒuyì, "friendship"), a related but different word: 友好 (yǒu hǎo) is the adjective describing how someone behaves, while 友谊 (yǒuyì) is the noun naming the bond itself.
