遇见(yù jiàn) - to meet by chance, to run into, to come across in Mandarin

遇见 (yù jiàn) is meeting by accident. You did not arrange it, you turned a corner and there they were. It is the word for bumping into an old classmate at the station, and it is also the standard verb for coming across a problem you did not expect.

Keep it apart from 见面 (jiàn miàn), which is a planned meeting, and from 认识 (rèn shi), which is meeting somebody for the first time and getting to know them. English uses "meet" for all three, Chinese does not.

Because 见 is already the result, 遇见 takes 了 or 过 rather than a complement: 遇见了 for a single occasion, 没遇见过 for never having come across something. Do not try to bolt 到 onto the end; 遇到 exists but it is a separate pairing, not 遇见到.
