整理(zhěng lǐ) - to tidy up, to sort out, to put in order in Mandarin

整理 (zhěng lǐ) is to take something disordered and arrange it properly. Rooms, drawers, files, data, notes, hair, thoughts: anything that can be in a mess can be 整理. The emphasis is on arranging rather than cleaning, so a desk you have 整理 is neat but not necessarily dusted.

It pairs naturally with 一下 to soften it into a quick job (整理一下), and with 好 to say the job is finished (整理好了). In an office context 整理资料 is the standard phrase for pulling scattered material into usable shape.

The trap is mixing it up with 打扫 and 收拾. 打扫 is cleaning: sweeping, mopping, dusting. 收拾 overlaps heavily with 整理 in speech but is more colloquial and can also mean to deal with somebody harshly. If you tell a friend 我要整理房间 you mean you are putting things away; 我要打扫房间 means you are getting the mop out.
