Chinese New Year has many traditional customs.

中国新年 (Zhōngguó Xīnnián) is a literal, more descriptive way of saying "Chinese New Year": 中国 (Zhōngguó) is "China" and 新年 (xīnnián) is "New Year". It refers to exactly the same festival as 春节 (Chūnjié); English speakers, and Chinese speakers writing for a foreign audience, reach for 中国新年 (Zhōngguó Xīnnián) more often than native speakers do among themselves.

Among Mandarin speakers at home, 春节 (Chūnjié) is by far the more natural term. 中国新年 (Zhōngguó Xīnnián) is the phrase you will meet on English-language tourist websites, in overseas Chinatown parade adverts, or when a Chinese friend is explaining the festival to someone who has never heard of it.

Either term is understood everywhere, so using 中国新年 (Zhōngguó Xīnnián) will never confuse anyone, but for exam purposes it is worth recognising both as names for the same festival.
