资格(zī gé) - qualification, credentials, standing in Mandarin

资格 (zī gé) is qualification in the sense of eligibility: whether you meet the bar for a job, an exam, a competition or a licence. 有资格 is to be eligible and 没有资格 is not to be.

It also covers standing, the right to speak or act. 你有什么资格管我 is a sharp piece of everyday Mandarin meaning "what gives you the right to tell me what to do", and it turns up in arguments constantly.

The trap is treating it as a synonym of 能力. 能力 is what you can actually do. 资格 is what you are formally permitted to do. Someone can be brilliant at a job and still lack the 资格 to apply for it, and Mandarin keeps those two ideas firmly apart.
