Prescribed by the Edexcel specification - revisited.
The short version
, not
.
Why?Hide
Portuguese usually drops the indefinite article for a bare profession, nationality, marital status or religion after : , . is not wrong, just less natural unless you are stressing it. Add um or back the moment an adjective describes the noun.
o is always no, a is always
.
Why?Hide
, and a do not sit beside the definite article in an ordinary sentence: they fuse into one word. + o is do, + a is , a + o is , and the plurals follow (, , ). Writing is a mistake every time.
A man's house is still a
Pedro .
Why?Hide
A Portuguese article agrees with its noun, never with the speaker or the owner. is feminine, so a man talking about his own house says a , and a woman talking about her car says o .
That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
