Ch 21 · Lesson 11

Noun gender and plurals

Prescribed by the Edexcel specification - revisited.

The short version

O and a : learn these two with their article

.

The day is beautiful.
Why?

O (day) ends in -a but is masculine, and a (hand) is feminine, though the first -ão words you meet, o and o , are masculine. The -ão ending is no guide on its own: a is feminine too, and so is every noun in -ção, such as a canção. Both are common enough that guessing will burn you, so learn them with o and a.

, ; , : -ão has three plurals

, .

Two bread rolls, please.
Why?

Nouns ending in -ão split three ways in the plural, and the word decides: gives , gives , gives . -ões is the biggest group and the safe guess for a new word, and every noun in -ção takes it. Learn and by heart.

That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
