Word origin
Borrowed in the eighteenth century from German Null, ultimately from Latin nullus ('none'). Russian has two spellings of the one word: ноль is the everyday form, while нуль survives in science and in set phrases such as с нуля ('from scratch') and ниже нуля ('below zero').
