este or esto?
One points at a thing. The other points at a situation.
The rule
este points at a masculine noun and agrees with it: este libro, este día. esto points at no noun at all - an idea, a mess, something you cannot name yet. It has no gender because there is nothing to agree with, which is why esto libro cannot exist.
