Spanish · Chapter 21 · Lesson 9 · Common mistake
no hables or no hablas?
A negative order is not simply the order with no put in front of it.
The rule
Spanish builds a negative command out of the SUBJUNCTIVE: no hables, no comas, no vengas. no hablas is not an order at all, it is a statement that you do not speak. The positive tú command (habla) and the negative one (no hables) come from different places entirely, which is why putting no in front of habla does not work.
