Spanish · Chapter 24 · Lesson 15 · Common mistake
se vende or se venden?
The commonest error on Spanish shop signs, and native speakers make it too.
The rule
In the passive se, the thing being acted on is the SUBJECT, so the verb agrees with it: se vende una casa, se venden casas. Learners freeze it as the singular and write se vende casas, which reads as though the house were doing the selling. Native speakers get this wrong constantly, which is why the wrong form looks so familiar.
