Spain vs Latin America: the vocabulary

The everyday words that change across the Spanish-speaking world: coche/carro, movil/celular, zumo/jugo, patata/papa, autobus/colectivo - and the words to be careful with (coger). There is no one correct Spanish.

The short version

The one regional swap worth learning first

Most Spain-versus-Latin-America vocabulary is harmless: coche or carro, zumo or jugo, nobody is wrong. One swap earns its keep before you travel. Coger is completely neutral in Spain and vulgar slang in Mexico, Argentina and Central America. Use tomar or agarrar there and save yourself a great deal of blushing.

tomar el autobús

to catch the bus

That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
