Ch 9 · Lesson 22

estas, estis or estos?

Esperanto keeps the tense the speaker actually used, and says the future when it means the future.

The rule

In reported speech Esperanto keeps the speaker's own tense: he said 'I am tired', so , , where English shifts to 'was'. And after the future is -os when the time is future: , where English says 'when you are there'. The bracket gives the words actually said, where it matters.
