Decode it and you have it. Antaŭ is before, in front of. Urbo is the town. An is the fore-town: the part you reach before you get to the town proper. That is exactly how German builds Vorstadt, and it is a slightly different picture from English, where the Latin - puts the suburb below the city rather than in front of it. Neither is a claim about geography; both are the same idea of a settlement attached to a bigger one.
Head-final, like every compound. The last root is the thing, the earlier ones say which kind. An is a kind of , just as is a kind of milito and is a suburban train. Compound words as a system are covered in the compounding article, including when the linking -o- earns its keep - here it does not, because is perfectly pronounceable without one.
The - family is large and worth collecting. Antaŭtago the day before, antaŭvidi to foresee, a prejudice (a judgement made in front of the evidence), antaŭnomo a first name, antaŭĉambro an anteroom. The preposition also builds the time words at the other end of this band: is the day after tomorrow and the day before yesterday.
Suburb, not countryside. Keep it apart from kamparo, which is open country, and from o, the surroundings of a place. is built-up and belongs to the city it hangs off; o is the person who lives there.
