Translation
weapon, arm
Word origin
Built inside Esperanto: armi ('to arm', from Latin arma) plus the tool suffix -il-, so an armilo is literally an 'arming-tool'. The same suffix gives ŝlosilo (key) from ŝlosi and montrilo (pointer) from montri.
- Origin
- Esperanto, from Latin arma
- Root
- armi + -il-
- English cognates
- arms, army, armour
Examples
.
The soldier carried his weapon.
.
A sword is an old weapon.
.
The police found the weapon in the house.
A textbook -il- word: once you know (to arm), decodes itself as the tool you arm with. The plural covers arms in general, and pafarmilo (paf- from , to shoot) narrows it to a firearm.
