The root covers anything long, thin and rigid: a walking stick, a shepherd's staff, a conductor's baton, a stick of chalk. o is the small version, which is how you get chopsticks (manĝobastonetoj). The grammatical point worth taking away is the preposition. An instrument takes per, never : per is hitting with a stick, while would mean hitting in the company of one. is for companions, per is for tools, and that rule holds across the whole language.
