Word origin
Built inside Esperanto from butiko ('shop') and the wildcard suffix -um-. Butiko itself is French boutique, which traces back through Provençal to Greek apothēkē, a storehouse, the same source as apothecary and bodega.

Examples
.
We shop in the centre of the town.
.
She spent the whole day shopping.
, .
I do not like shopping, but I need new clothes.
If -um- has a poster word in modern Esperanto, this is it. The suffix means nothing in particular: it says the new word is obviously connected to the root, and leaves you to work out how. Butiko is a shop, so is to do the shop thing, and everybody understands that as wandering round the shops.
That is the point worth taking away. is not , to buy. You can for an afternoon and come home with nothing, exactly as in English. Because -um- carries no rule, these words have to be learnt one at a time; see The -um wildcard, and word-formation beyond the rules.
It is intransitive: you do not a thing. Buy the thing with aĉeti.
