From Greek demokratia, demos ('the people') plus kratos ('power, rule'). The word describes Athenian practice from the fifth century BC and reached Esperanto through the shared international form.

The -krati- element is productive in Esperanto exactly as in English, so aristokratio and burokratio are built the same way and are equally transparent. A democrat is a demokrato, the adjective is demokratia, and something done democratically is done demokratie.
