Translation
native, innate, from birth
Word origin
Not borrowed at all: assembled inside Esperanto from the preposition de ('from'), the root nask- ('birth', itself from Latin nasci, to be born) and the adjective ending -a. Something denaska is something you have had from birth.
- Origin
- Esperanto, on a Latin root
- Root
- de + nask- + -a
- English cognates
- natal, nascent
Examples
.
She is a native Esperanto speaker.
.
Their native language is very difficult.
.
Native-speaker children learn two languages at the same time.
A clean example of how Esperanto builds rather than borrows. plus nask- plus -a gives from-birth, and the whole meaning is readable without a dictionary the first time you meet it. The term carries weight in the movement: a -parolanto is one of the thousand-odd people raised speaking the language at home, and denaskismo is the practice of doing so.
