Word origin
An international word from Latin discutere (to shake apart), which drifted from breaking a thing to pieces to examining a question from every side. Esperanto took it through French discuter.

Both constructions are good Esperanto: takes the topic straight as an object, and holds it at arm's length with . The word spans the same range as in French: a calm exchange of views, but also a heated one, so ! from a parent means "no arguing". The noun is diskuto; a formal debate leans on o when you want the ongoing process.
