This is the augmentative suffix -- standing on its own legs as a word, which Esperanto allows for every affix: for tiny, ino for a female, for a tool, for hugely. Nothing else in the language does that so freely, and it is one of the reasons the grammar feels like a kit rather than a list. and both intensify, but is neutral where is emphatic, roughly the gap between "very" and "hugely". Unlike it also sits happily in front of a verb.
