Translation

screen

Word origin

From French ecran, a screen, which came into French from a Germanic word for a shield or shelter. English screen is the same word arriving by a different route, which is why the two look nothing alike and mean the same thing.

Examples

.

I saw his face on the screen.

.

The computer has a big screen.

.

The school bought a new screen for the room.

It started as a shield. Before it was a thing you look at, an was a thing you hid behind: a fire screen, a folding screen, anything put up to block heat or a draught or a view. That older sense is still live - ŝirmekrano for a protective screen - but it is no longer what the word means unmarked. Today is a display surface first.

The modern range. Komputila is a monitor, tuŝekrano a touchscreen, a phone screen, and is the cinema in the same figure of speech English uses. Surekrane means on-screen, and ekrankopio is a screenshot - literally a screen copy, and one of those compounds that tells you Esperanto has kept up.

The people expect does not exist. There is no i. To display something you montri it, i it, or say it appears . That is the general lesson with borrowed technical nouns in Esperanto: the noun comes in, but the verb usually has to be built or borrowed separately, and reaching for the ready-made compound is nearly always better than inventing one.

Nearby. Komputilo, televido, filmo, kinejo, bildo.
