Translation

outstanding, excellent

Word origin

Built inside Esperanto from el ('out of') and stari ('to stand'), with the adjective ending. It is the same picture English draws in outstanding and Latin drew in eminent: the thing that stands out from the row.

Origin
Esperanto compound, on a Latin root
Root
el + stari

Examples

.

She is an outstanding teacher.

.

He has an outstanding talent for music.

.

That house is the most striking building in the town.

Take it apart before you memorise it: plus star plus a is "standing out", and the metaphor is the same one English uses. That is worth noticing, because the literal sense survives too - a balcony that juts from a wall is , and the praise is only the figurative reading of the same word.
