Translation
enthusiasm
Word origin
From Greek enthousiasmos, being possessed by a god, from en ('in') plus theos ('god'). The word began as religious frenzy and cooled into keenness on the way through French and English.
- Origin
- Greek
- Root
- entheos
- English cognates
- enthusiasm, theology, atheist
Examples
.
The students worked with great enthusiasm.
.
He began learning the language with enthusiasm.
.
After one month the enthusiasm disappeared.
Do not read the first syllable as the Esperanto preposition : - came in whole from Greek and has no seam in it. Beside it sits , which is the hotter, more single-minded zeal, while is the bright keenness that can, as in the third sentence, wear off.
