finance
Word origin
From French finance, from Old French finer ('to settle up, to pay'), from fin ('end') and behind that Latin finis. A payment was originally what ended a debt, which is also how a fine came to be a punishment.

Examples
.
The town's finances are in a bad state.
.
He studies finance at the university.
.
She looks after the company's finances.
Singular is the field: the management of money, the subject you study. Put it in the plural and becomes somebody's actual money situation, exactly as English switches from finance to finances. The person is a o, the adjective financa, and financi is the verb for funding something.
