The fence you need is with flui, to flow. They share three letters and a pleasing image - a flute does sound like something flowing - and they are unrelated. Flu- is from Latin fluere, to flow, and gives fluo (a current), flua (fluent) and enflui (to flow in). Flut- is from French flûte and gives an instrument. There is no -t- suffix in Esperanto that could turn a verb into an object, so if you find yourself deriving fluto from flui, the grammar itself is telling you no.

The band arrives together. Fluto and trumpeto sit three ranks apart in this chapter, which is not a coincidence - a course that orders words by how often people actually use them will hand you a wind section in one go. Add violono at 1,612, gitaro at 1,582 and the kordo page next door, and the chapter has an orchestra.

The derivations are the usual clean set. A flutisto plays one, fluti is to play it, and flutilo is not a word because the flute is already the tool. The one to know is blovinstrumento, a wind instrument, which sets fluto and trumpeto on one side and violono and gitaro on the other. You blovas into a flute; you touch the strings of a violin.
