hobio

A doublet with a fence, so here is the fence. Esperanto has two words for this, and both are correct. Ŝatokupo, rank 2,386, is the home build: ŝati, to like, plus okupo, an occupation, so a liked occupation. Hobio is the international loan, taken whole from English. Neither is wrong and neither is going away.

Which one to use, judged on evidence rather than taste. Our own frequency list puts ŝatokupo three hundred ranks ahead of hobio, which is a real finding and not a preference: in running Esperanto text the built word is the commoner one. That fits the language's habit. Where a root can be assembled from pieces the learner already owns, Esperanto tends to assemble it, and the loan stays as a shorter alternative in speech. The pattern is exactly the one you met with futbalo against piedpilkado, only pointing the other way, which is worth noticing: the movement is not uniformly purist and it is not uniformly international. It decides word by word.

Practical advice. Write ŝatokupo and you will always be understood and never criticised. Say hobio in conversation and nobody will blink. Learn both, because you will read both, and note that ŝatokupo also gives you the useful ŝatokupa for amateur, while hobio mostly sits still. Chess, collecting, ludi an instrument: all of them fit either word.
