The animal-cry set, and where this one sits. Esperanto refuses to let one verb do all the noises, and by this point in the course you have most of the set. Bleki at 2,465 is the general one - to make the cry proper to your species, whatever that cry is, so a sheep, a donkey and a cow all blekas. Boji at 1,852 is to bark, short and sharp. Muĝi at 2,257 is the deep continuous roar of a bull, a crowd or the sea. And hurli is the long rising wail: a wolf at the moon, a dog left alone, a siren, the wind in a chimney. English "howl" covers the same ground and, unusually, maps almost one to one.

It is not krii. Krii at 299 is to shout or cry out, and it belongs to people saying something. Hurli has no words in it. A person who hurlas is not shouting a message but making a sound - grief, pain, or a football crowd. Keep them apart and your prose stops sounding translated.

The wider family. The interjections and onomatopoeia article collects the noise words properly, including the ones the dictionary does not bother with. From hurli you get hurlo, a single howl, and hurlado, howling that goes on and on, which is what you actually hear at night. Note that hurli is intransitive: the wolf howls, it does not howl something. To howl a word at somebody, you need elhurli or plain krii.
