The dog and its young slept next to the fire.
is the biological word: the young of an animal, or a descendant in a line. It is not the word for a child in the everyday sense - that is , and calling a small boy an sounds either zoological or insulting. As a suffix -- is one of the tidiest pieces of the language: o kitten, puppy, o foal, prince by birth. The name of the 1907 reform project Ido comes from exactly this suffix, since its authors framed it as the offspring of Esperanto.
