Translation

somewhere, anywhere

Word origin

Not a borrowing but a cell of Zamenhof's correlative table: the indefinite i- beginning joined to the -e ending for place, so 'some' plus 'where'.

Origin
Esperanto correlative
Root
i- + -e

Examples

.

I lost my money somewhere in the city.

?

Have you seen him anywhere?

.

Somewhere in the world there is a place for us.

is the place cell of the i- row in the correlative table: the indefinite "somewhere", and in questions and negatives "anywhere". Its table neighbours are kie where, tie there, ĉie everywhere, and nowhere; swap the ending instead and you get io something and iam sometime. Like the rest of the -e place words it takes -n for motion towards: means I will go somewhere or other.
