Word origin
Built inside Esperanto from ĵurnalo ('newspaper, journal') plus -ist-, the suffix for somebody who does a thing as a trade. The root reaches back through French journal to Latin diurnalis, 'of the day', from dies.

She works as a journalist at a big magazine.
.
The journalists waited in front of the door of the meeting.
A real build, and a transparent one: ĵurnalo is the paper, -- marks the person who works with it professionally, and the -o makes a noun. Once you have that pattern you have hundreds of words for free, because -- attaches to almost anything: , o, . The suffix and its neighbours are covered in the affixes article.
Note that -- is about the trade rather than the belief. Somebody who merely holds an opinion takes -an- or a phrase, so an is a speaker of the language rather than an adherent of a doctrine. And there is a spelling trap worth flagging: the first letter is ĵ, not j, so the word starts with the sound in "pleasure", and the x-system slug is jx, not j.
