A is the fortified thing on the hill; a is the grand thing you live in for show. Esperanto keeps that distinction as firmly as English does, so do not swap them. The root behaves normally under the affixes: o for a vast one, o for the sort of turreted folly a rich Victorian built in his garden, and o for the person who lives there. Almost all of Esperanto's castles turn up in translated European fairy tales, which is why the word sits this high in the frequency list at all.
