From Latin communicare, to share or make common, built on communis. The same verb gave English communicate and communion, and it is the reason a shared meal and a shared message are described with one word family.

The root is komunik-, borrowed whole. It looks like plus a suffix, but -ik is not an Esperanto affix, so do not try to build it: the two words are relatives in Latin, not a derivation in Esperanto. Transitively you a piece of news to somebody; for the two-way sense of people being in touch, i or plain reads better.
