Translation
quality, grade (how good a thing is); a quality, an attribute
Word origin
From Latin qualitas, coined by Cicero from qualis ('of what kind') to translate the Greek poiotes. It began life as a philosopher's term for what kind of thing something is, and only later came to mean how good it is.

Both English senses survive in Esperanto, and the plural usually picks the second: are the traits a person has, while is how good the work is. answers "what kind"; answers "how much"; answers "what is it worth".
