introduces something contrary to fact, so the verb in its clause normally takes the conditional -us: . In front of a bare noun or phrase it needs no verb at all and means something like as it were. Note the ŭ: it is a semivowel that only ever appears after a vowel, in , , , , and never begins a syllable.
