The -ad- suffix means the action considered as a process, stretched out in time, and is its textbook case. is work as a thing you have or a job you do; is the working, the ongoing grind. The distinction matters more in Esperanto than English lets on, because the suffix is available on every verb root: is speaking or a speech, is living, o is sustained gunfire rather than one shot. If a sentence feels like it needs a gerund, -ad- is usually the answer.
