This is with -ad-, the suffix that turns an action into a sustained, ongoing one, so is not a single try but the whole business of trying over time. That distinction is real: peno is an effort, is striving. Esperanto uses -ad- this way everywhere, and once you see it you get , and for free. It is a heavy, slightly formal word, common in the movement's own literature about the long campaign for the language, and it takes for the goal it strains towards.
