A lion at rank 613 tells you something about the corpus rather than about lions. Early Esperanto is heavy on fables, folk tales and translated scripture, and lions turn up in all three far more often than they turn up in conversation.

The animal suffixes work as expected: -in- gives o for the lioness, -- gives o for the cub. Both patterns transfer to every other animal you meet, which is the real reason to learn this word rather than for the beast itself.
