Built inside Esperanto from milito ('war') and the occupational suffix -ist-, so the word says one whose profession is war. Milito itself comes from Latin militia and miles, genitive militis, a soldier.

That makes wider than soldato, which is the soldier in the ranks; a is anybody whose trade is the military, officer or private, and often the word carries a faint chill in Esperanto texts, since the movement grew up hoping to make the profession unnecessary. The adjective is , and militisma is something else again, militaristic.
