The false seam. Esperanto really does have a suffix -er-. It means one fragment of a mass: is sand and a o is a single grain of it, is money and a o is a coin. So a learner who has met -er- looks at -er-a and reasonably expects a word about small pieces.

It is not there. Moder- is one Latin root, borrowed whole, and the -a on the end is the only thing you can peel off. There is no Esperanto root - for the supposed -er- to attach to.

What it means in use. is the middle of a range and it is not a criticism. Moderate prices are reasonable ones, a moderate opinion is a temperate rather than a feeble one, and a moderate amount is enough without being too much. Its opposite is , rank 1370. Its near neighbours are , rank 698, which is about judgement, and , rank 1312, which is about gentleness. is about quantity and degree: how much, not how wisely or how kindly.

The verb i, to moderate something, and the noun o, moderation, both build regularly off it.
