novelo

This is the false friend that catches everybody once. Novelo is a short story. A novel, the thing you take on holiday, is a romano. The mistake is so predictable that Falsaj amikoj lists it in the same breath as aktuala and akurata, and the Reta Vortaro is unusually specific about the boundary: a novelo runs to something like fifty pages with a small cast, and past that you are writing a romano. If what you mean is a full-length book, say romano and nothing else.

English is the odd one out, not Esperanto. Italian novella, Spanish novela corta, German Novelle, Russian новелла, Polish nowela - across Europe the word names the short form, exactly as Esperanto does. English took novella for the short thing and novel for the long thing and then let novel do most of the work, which is why an English speaker's instinct here is the wrong one. Zamenhof was borrowing from the European consensus, and the consensus was not English.

The word is load-bearing in Esperanto literature. The graded shelf described in Esperanta literaturo is built out of noveloj: Claude Piron's Vere aŭ fantazie is forty-four of them, pitched to climb from about four hundred roots to past a thousand, and the last book in his Johán Valano detective sequence is called Ĉu rakonti novele? precisely because it breaks the pattern and gives you short stories instead of a novel. A writer of them is a novelisto; a collection is a novelaro; and novela is the adjective, so novela stilo is the compressed, single-incident manner the form demands.
