Esperanto keeps two words apart that English squashes into one. A is a label - the number on a house, a room, a magazine issue, a bus. A is a quantity, the mathematical thing you can add up. So is how many books there are, while is the catalogue tag stuck on its spine. Get them the wrong way round and you will be understood, but you will sound as though you have not been reading. The verb numeri means to number things in sequence.
