Word origin
From Latin patiens, the present participle of pati ('to suffer, to undergo'), so a patient is literally one who undergoes something. English patient, patience and passion all grew from that same verb.

Careful here: English uses one word for two ideas, and Esperanto does not. A is a sick person in a doctor's care and nothing else. The virtue of waiting calmly is , and the adjective is pacienca. So pacienca is a patient patient, and neither word can do the other's job.
