suferi

Suferi works both ways. Used intransitively with pro or de, it names the cause of the suffering: suferi pro malsano. Used transitively, the object is what you undergo: suferi doloron, suferi malvenkon. From that second pattern comes the sense of putting up with something, close to toleri, and the negative mi ne povas suferi lin is exactly the English "I cannot bear him". The noun is sufero, and suferigi with the causative suffix means to inflict suffering, which is a rather more useful word than one would like.
