Broader than it looks. English "torture" is physical and specific, but covers the nagging thought, the toothache and the tormentor with the irons alike, so a question can perfectly well you. It is transitive, and -- gives the receiving end: i is to be tormented, with the cause introduced by pro. Turmento is the torment itself and turmentanto the one inflicting it. Note the neighbouring , which is intransitive - you without an object, but you somebody.
