From Greek periodos, a going round, built on peri ('around') and hodos ('a way'). The circuit sense survives in the period of a pendulum and in the periodic table, where the rows repeat.

is the neutral, slightly technical option next to , which implies
an age with a character of its own. The recurring sense is alive too: a
wave or a pendulum has a . Resist reading the -od- as a suffix.
Esperanto has no -od-, the root is the whole period-, and peri- is
not a prefix here either, whatever the Greek did originally.
